Top flight game store Games Plus in Mt. Prospect has been running multi day game auctions for quite a while now. The auction allows gamers to auction off their goods in exchange for store credit. There is no charge for this service.
I went for the first time last Spring during their dedicated wargames and eurogames night. (Each game genre, board, rpg, minis, etc. has their own night). The place was packed with chairs hard to find (so arrive early). However, the auction is very well run and the crowd is a testament to the quality of items up for auction.
I walked away with Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear for $32, Great War at Sea: Mediterranean for about $20, Air Bridge to Victory for about $15, and Panzer Grenadier: Beyond Normandy for about $20. While I was very pleased with these prices, I think Awakening the Bear and Great War at Sea are the only two that are long term play candidates for me. I doubt the others will see much table time. Maybe I should auction those next time around!
The night wasn’t without some disappointment though. I was one of two final bidders on GDWs old Third World War series. I think it is was for three of the four games in the series. While the winning bid was a very reasonable $110, I couldn’t bring myself to spend that much when I knew other good games were coming. While I generaly remember losing out on several auctions, this is the only one that stays with me six month later. I consider that a sign that I did pretty well overall.
The Fall version of the auction starts later this week. I’m heading up for wargame night again which is this Friday. While I hope to see you there, I also hope you don’t outbid me!
Stay tuned and I’ll let you know how I make out after Friday!
