Where Eagles Dare XXX Corps Breakout – Too Good to be True?
Looking over your 30 Corps breakout pics I have a couple of questions.
First, how in the hell did Guards Armor reach Eindhoven in 2 turns? I have played WED quite a bit and 2 combined TDC/WED campaigns and I just can’t see how that can happen unless the German player lets you. Just doesn’t seem possible to me under normal circumstances.
Second, it looks like the AT guns of the 231st Brigade are set up deployed on a raised road, which means you can’t mount them later and they are stuck there. Is that your intent. Also you ignore all those German units on your flank which will quickly voluntarily rout and then be used later on as reinforcements further north on the road. I like to hit these guys and beat them up so they don’t cause trouble later. You have enough force to punch a hole for GA and still hit the other units hard.
Good Questions Randy.
Just doesn't seem possible to me under normal circumstances.
You are right to be skeptical as our results were atypical for sure.
First to your questions/statements (and you’ll have to realize we are relying on my memory from play about 2 weeks ago):

Yeah, they probably shouldn’t have been there although it is a legal placement. I’d maintain that a) their position had little to do with the break out of the XXX Corps b) they could be placed elsewhere and been just as effective c) they could have retired by prologe off that hex, mounted up, and got on the road elsewhere like 47.221
Also you ignore all those German units on your flank which will quickly voluntarily rout . . .
Yeah, many (but not all) of those units got away. Maybe half. That was a risk we were willing to take. In retrospect we overcompensated on the front and could have committed more of the 231st against those units. And to be sure we didn’t play long enough to see how much this would bite us later on.
We had extraordinary success with the air strikes elsewhere. IIRC 3-4 flak units were eliminated or suppressed in the initial Air Strikes. KG Roestel was suppressed.
As for the breakout itself, we overloaded at the front easily setting up assaults that eliminated KG Walther in the blocking hexes clearing the way for the units in column. Those front Walther units were softened up with some airstrikes (on Club Route) and barrages (off Club Route) too.
By the end of the Group Hot chit, we were around 52.210. During the Allied DC chit, we cleared out the flak in 52.209 and sped toward Valkenswaard (leaving some INF behind). KG Roestel was still suppressed at this point so we just drove around him. Honestly, I can remember what state the German Arty was in at this point. I do remember a lot of failed or ineffective/minimally effective Opportunity Fire rolls throughout though. Maybe some happened here.
So after one turn/two chits we were beyond Valkenswaard for the most part.
For turn two, the GA Div Activation is added.
Aalst was cleared out in the initial Air Strikes. Flak in 64.183 was our last major obstacle. We “stuffed” it with one unit reducing its range and LOS. From there the rest of the units drove by/around it risking OP Fire. This was the riskiest part of the effort. We made it though after some more failed/ineffective Op Fire rolls.
From there we were in the outskirts of Eindhoven and again drove around from flak, this time at 65.179. Making our way to Son from there . . .
So all in all, while we were lucky, I think it was legit. I’m pretty experienced with the system and the German player was too. He was in disbelief while it was happening too, but he played it.
Better shots for the Germans could have undone a lot of our advances for sure. But heck, we had maybe one more chit to put to use for the 1700 turn and the whole 1900 turn ahead of us. Son seems possible but not guaranteed in one day.
I wouldn’t count on these results by a long shot. My other plays of the breakout end up like most others I’ve heard about; burning wreckage on the raised highway blocking other traffic and the like.
But with a bit of luck and a stop-for-nothing approach maybe, just maybe it can happen.
[UPDATE – June 13, 2014: just posted this over on CSWE]
Going back to some of the questions about the XXX Corps breakout we ran through at CSWE. Setting up the campaign tonight I noticed that that Eindhoven Garrisons and a few of the RC’s flak weren’t set up when we played. I was pretty clear we were playing a truncated version though. That certainly would have made it tougher.
Given our fortunes with the air strikes, I’d maintain we could have (and did) still make it to Eindhoven in two turns but who knows for sure with those extra forces. Getting *through* Eindhoven would have been a different story.
Just had to get that off my chest. Going to go play it again as punishment . . .
