    Ty, I have following your WED Campaign for the last several weeks after finding your You Tube videos on the WED game system. Very soon, at the Buckeye Game Fest (http://www.buckeyegamefest.com/) we will be doing the entire Market Garden Battle. We have I believe 9 commanders, so it should be a lot of fun. With you experience with both DC and WED, do you have any suggestions for combined play. We have a number of charts and printed documents etc. from CSW and BGG which are excellent. I was thinking you would have some additional thoughts maybe to share. I will have to attend one of your live sessions of WED, but was not sure how to do this, so any help would be appreciated. Really liked your YouTube videos you have posted over time on the GTS. MWV

      Hi Mark

      I got to know Bill Quoss a bit from Consimworld Expo and he lives here in the Chicago area. IIRC he is helping run that event. Wish I could join!

      Bill has more combined game experience than me (as in I have none!). Is he including the combined game rules they used at CSWE in the past? They are rules for running the games concurrently rather than fully combined. As I understand it TDC can run slower than WED.

      Or are you looking for strategy tips?

      This is only my first WED campaign game. If you’d like to join a session to play or observe, you’ll need a Skype account, VASSAL, and the TDC VASSAL module. Not sure about your experience with those systems, but start there and I can help onwards.

        Yes, Bill has come to Buckeye Game Fest before, and look forward to playing again. Bill does have a lot of experience, which we will use while playing. We are using the combined rules from CSW. Bill will be the 82nd AB commander, while I have XXX Corps. I am playing it solitaire right now. With the raised road, it does not take much to delay XXX Corps.

        I do have a Skype account, but you not yet have VASSAL for either WED or TDC. Do you have to purchase them or do you d/l them. I just do not have any experience with VASSAL to date.

          XXX Corps! That is great! My dream is to play them in the combined game one day . . . I think they should get all the air assets at the beginning. The rest will come down the the luck of the chit draw. But with that luck, I’m convinced you can make it to Eindhoven early the first day. Not easy mind you, but possible!

            Ty, I will look to d/l VASSL after our Market-Garden game at Buckeye Game Fest next week. I was impressed in your game XXX Corps was able to eliminate the AT unit on the club route and the Flak unit on the club route in hex 52.210 I may not be able to break through to Valkenswaald until the 1700 turn, if the chit pull works my way.

            Sounds good on VASSAL.

            My take on the XXX Corps breakout is generally . . . XXX Corps gets all the air assets (let the paratroops up the road tough it out and earn their keep). No arty barrages on the road or the frontlines. One on the mortar in 47.222.

            231st can easily clear a path on the 1st turn via assaults. Just prepare your placement carefully with infantry stacks 3, sometimes 4 high.

            The KG Walther AT might end up in the woods around 47.219. No matter the air strikes will ignore it. Pound the hell out of it via air strikes.

            Pound the hell out of the armored unit in 59.199. I’m torn on what to do about the enemy arty. They are going to have to find a way to spot. They tend to stay away so I zoom around them.

            Save some air for the flack in 52.210, but that is a zero step unit and should fall easily.

            You can use some 2nd turn Barrages for the flak in 65.186 and 66.186 but that violates the no barrages on roads rule of thumb. The alternative is to tough it out with the XXX armor but doing it before the 2nd turn. Why wait? Those flak will also be zero steppers so you just need to get close. That 2nd chit though will be a DC or Group Hot formation so you might have some flexibility.

            IN that case, wait until 1700 and save those 2nd turn barrages for the 88 in 64.183. He’s deadly.

            Oh yeah, manage your XXX Corps commander carefully. I’ve seen him get placed where the primary, lead element units are OOC and that is bad.

            Then, you are on the outskirts of Eindhoven. And the Germans are aware . . .

            All this is easy to write. Playing it out is another story as you go FtF. It is good to have a plan though!

    I pretty much in agreement with you here on the air. XXX Corps should probably use it all to get up and then off the raised road as soon as possible. I did notice when doing assaults with more than 4 steps in a hex, you get the mass modifier which can hurt you in Assault Combat. I am thinking one hex with 3 or 4 infantry of the 213th, and the other hex with two units to assault hopefully after unit has been suppressed. Since you have to use all of your Air Barrages on the 1500 turn, some of the other units may just have to wait to be hit with direct fire from the Irish Guards. Forgot to ask, in the WED Campaign game, the Guards Div Activation chit does not start in the original pool of Allied chits. So it looks like you would have to purchase it with Dispatch points on the 1700 turn. Is this how read the WED Campaign rules? Do you concur with this?

      I don’t mind the mass modifier that much in this case. I’ll trade a +1 DRM for overwhelming odds.

      You’re right about the GAD div activation chit. I popped open VASSAL to model some of what we’re talking about. I was reminded that it doesn’t appear until 1700. This makes leader management even more crucial.

    Ty, I finally had a chance to d/l the VASSAL you mentioned above along with the TDC. Would be interested a help session from you to set it up and I would like to sometime in the future attend you session of WED. What is required to be a watcher for your WED game. Thanks Mark V
